How Search Engines Operate
Search engines have a short list of critical operations that allows them to provide relevant web results when searchers use their system to find information.
1. Crawling the Web
Search engines run automated programs, called "bots" or "spiders" that use the hyperlink structure of the web to "crawl" the pages and documents that make up the World Wide Web. Estimates are that of the approximately 20 billion existing pages, search engines have crawled between 8 and 10 billion.
2. Indexing Documents
Once a page has been crawled, it's contents can be "indexed" - stored in a giant database of documents that makes up a search engine's "index". This index needs to be tightly managed, so that requests which must search and sort billions of documents can be completed in fractions of a second.
3. Processing Queries
When a request for information comes into the search engine (hundreds of millions do each day), the engine retrieves from its index all the document that match the query. A match is determined if the terms or phrase is found on the page in the manner specified by the user. For example, a search for car and driver magazine at Google returns 8.25 million results, but a search for the same phrase in quotes ("car and driver magazine") returns only 166 thousand results. In the first system, commonly called "Findall" mode, Google returned all documents which had the terms "car" "driver" and "magazine" (they ignore the term "and" because it's not useful to narrowing the results), while in the second search, only those pages with the exact phrase "car and driver magazine" were returned. Other advanced operators (Google has a list of 11) can change which results a search engine will consider a match for a given query.
4. Ranking Results
Once the search engine has determined which results are a match for the query, the engine's algorithm (a mathematical equation commonly used for sorting) runs calculations on each of the results to determine which is most relevant to the given query. They sort these on the results pages in order from most relevant to least so that users can make a choice about which to select.
Although a search engine's operations are not particularly lengthy, systems like Google, Yahoo!, AskJeeves and MSN are among the most complex, processing-intensive computers in the world, managing millions of calculations each second and funneling demands for information to an enormous group of users.

- Design dan isi yang sukai google:
- Situs dengan susunan yang jelas dan menggunakan teks sebagai link (bukan gambar). Setiap halaman harus dapat dicapai dengan satu buah teks link statik.
- Memiliki site map yang memudahkan pengunjung, jika satu halaman site map terdapat lebih dari 100 link, maka pisahkan dalam halaman lain.
- Berisi informasi yang berguna, padat dan isinya jelas.
- Pikirkanlah kata-kata apa yang dicari orang untuk membuka website Anda, pastikan bahwa dalam web Anda benar-benar terdapat kata tersebut.
- Usahakan menggunakan teks, bukan gambar untuk menjelaskan nama, isi, atau link. Google crawler tidak mengenali teks yang ada di dalam gambar.
- Pastikan judul dan atribut ALT akurat.
- Periksa apakah ada link yang mati dan kode HTML yang salah.
- Jika Anda menggunakan dynamic pages, (misalnya URL dengan tanda “?”, berhati-hatilah bahwa tidak setiap search engine dapat mengindeks halaman dinamic. Buat parameter sesingkat mungkin dan sesedikit mungkin.
- Link dalam satu halaman kurang dari 100 buah.
- Hal-hal yang dilarang google:
- Jangan membuat halaman yang berbeda ketika dilihat pengunjung atau search engines (cloaking).
- Tidak menggunakan trik untuk meningkatkan ranking search engine. Cara yang mudah untuk meningkatkan ranking di google adalah dengan bertanya pada diri sendiri: Apakah web saya berguna bagi pengunjung?
- Jangan tukar menukar link dengan website atau blog yang isinya tidak berhubungan dengan website atau blog Anda (link schemes).
- Jangan menggunakan tool otomatis untuk submit page atau check page rank, google tidak merekomendasikan program semacam WebPosition Gold.
- Hindari teks atau link yang tidak kelihatan (kecil sekali atau warnanya sama dengan background)
- Jangan menggunakan cloaking atau sneaky redirect.
- Jangan menggunakan submit otomatis ke search engines.
- Jangan mengisi halaman dengan keywords yang tidak relevant.
- Jangan membuat halaman, subdomain, atau domain dengan isi yang sama persis.
- Jangan membuat halaman yang ditujukan untuk phising, menginstall virus, trojan, atau badware lain.
- Hindari doorway yang hanya dibuat untuk search engines.
- Hindari halaman yang hanya berisi program afiliasi dengan sedikit atau tidak ada isi yang original.
- Jika situs Anda berisi tentang program afiliasi, pastikan bahwa situs Anda memiliki nilai tambah.
- Isi website Anda dengan tulisan yang unik (bukan copy-paste) dan isi yang relevan.
- Saran dari google (Google Friendly Site):
- Berikan informasi yang dibutuhkan pengunjung dengan infomasi yang berkualitas.
- Pastikan website lain memasang link ke website Anda. Dalam menentukan ranking, Google mengkombinasikan jumlah link yang mengarah ke website Anda (pagerank) dan isi dari website Anda.
- Buat website yang mudah dalam hal navigasi. Semua halaman harus terhubung minimal dengan satu teks link.
- Hindari “cloaking” atau membayar SEO service, yaitu perusahaan yang menawarkan bisa meningkatkan posisi Anda pada search engine. Banyak metode yang dilakukan oleh SEO Service melanggar ketentuan google ini.

Do you Know about Search Engine Optimization ? SEO very important to brought many visitors to our blog. Many netters who started and find out studying about SEO neighbors trapped and lost in the wilderness of cyberspace so that they end up still do not understand what is SEO. Is that some kind of SEO methods or applications, or even a science of magic? Many netters who can not answer that.
Well, after browsing around, I found a good article about methods of increasing traffic blog or website. And from what I observed, this method is very realistic.
